Map pack

The three local business results Google shows above the normal listings, with a map beside them.

The map pack is the block of three local results that appears above the ordinary blue links on almost any search with local intent. For most local businesses it is worth more than any organic position underneath it, because it carries directions, a phone number, opening hours and star ratings without the searcher needing to click through to a website.

What decides who appears in it?

  • Proximity. How close your registered address is to wherever the searcher is standing. In a dense city this radius can be a few blocks.
  • Prominence. How well known the business is, measured through reviews, mentions and links.
  • Relevance. How closely your Google Business Profile categories and services match what was searched.

Proximity is the one you cannot buy, which is why a business two miles away can outrank you for a search made on their street and lose to you on yours.

Improving your map pack visibility

Typically, improving your map pack position starts with your Google Business Profile, not your website. A complete, accurate profile with the right categories does more for map pack placement than most on-site changes.

As a result, Google documents proximity, prominence and relevance as the official ranking factors behind the map pack. See Google’s own guidance on local ranking for the full detail behind each one.

Specifically, most local businesses see the biggest jump from small, unglamorous fixes: choosing the single most accurate primary category, listing every location precisely, and asking recent customers for reviews consistently. Similarly, keeping opening hours current avoids the profile being suppressed during a search that matters. Notably, none of this requires a marketing budget, just consistent attention over a few months.

However, outdated hours are a common reason a profile drops out of local search results at exactly the wrong moment. Instead, treat the profile as a living page that needs monthly attention, not a form you fill in once and forget.
