Google Business Profile

The free listing that puts your business in Google Maps and the local results.

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how your business appears in Google Maps and the local results, including hours, photos, reviews, services and directions.

What it does for you

  • Makes you eligible for the map pack, the three local results above the organic listings.
  • Shows reviews and star ratings before anybody clicks anything.
  • Provides click-to-call and directions without a website visit.

What makes one work

Completeness beats volume. Categories chosen precisely, every service listed, hours including holidays, recent photographs, and replies to reviews. It costs nothing and no advertising spend can buy a higher position in the map.

Getting your Google Business Profile right

Typically, a Google Business Profile audit is the first thing we check before any service area business setup, since the two are closely linked.

For example, Google publishes its own guidelines for representing your business, and following them closely avoids suspensions.

Specifically, keep photos current rather than uploading once at setup, since fresh images correlate strongly with more calls and direction requests. Similarly, respond to every review, good or bad, within a few days. Notably, an inactive listing can quietly lose visibility even if nothing appears to have changed.

However, a profile that looks finished at launch can quietly drift out of date within months if nobody owns it. Instead, treat it as a page someone checks every few weeks, the same way you would check a shopfront window.

Notably, businesses that post an update or photo every few weeks tend to outperform ones that set the profile up once and never return, even when the underlying business is identical. A few minutes a month is usually all it takes to stay ahead of competitors who treat the profile as a one-time task.

For example, a single fresh photo from last week often does more than ten old ones ever could.
