Advice written for Manhattan does not transfer cleanly to Brooklyn or Queens. The distances are longer, the neighbourhoods are more distinct, and a large share of customers search in a language other than English.

Neighbourhood beats borough

Almost nobody searches for a plumber in Brooklyn. They search for a plumber in Bushwick, or in Park Slope, or simply plumber near me while standing there. Borough-level pages tend to rank for nothing. Neighbourhood-level content, backed by a service area set correctly in your profile, is what actually gets found.

Service area businesses need different settings

If you travel to customers rather than receiving them, your profile should be configured as a service area business with the areas listed, and your address hidden. Getting this wrong either limits your radius or gets the listing suspended.

Language is a ranking factor here

Queens is the most linguistically diverse county in the United States. Customers search, read reviews and ask for recommendations in more than one language. Listing the languages you speak in your profile, and having at least key pages available in the languages your customers use, converts far better than a translate widget bolted onto the corner.

Reviews travel by community

In the outer boroughs, word of mouth still routes a large share of work, and it increasingly runs through community groups rather than Google. Reviews still matter for ranking, but expect discovery to be split between search and networks you do not control.
