Most hosting panels offer a one-click installer, and for a first site that is genuinely the fastest route. What the installer does not do is make the sensible choices for you, so this tutorial walks through the steps that matter after the install finishes.
Before you start
Point your domain at your hosting account first and wait for the DNS to settle. Installing WordPress on a domain that is still resolving elsewhere leads to a site URL you will have to correct later, and correcting it means editing the database.
Running the install
Choose the domain root rather than a subdirectory unless you have a specific reason not to. Set the admin username to something other than admin, pick a long password, and use an email address you actually read, because that is where password resets and update notices go.
The first five minutes after
Set your permalinks to Post name, delete the sample page and the Hello World post, and remove the plugins your host preinstalled that you did not ask for. Then set your site title and tagline before you forget, because the tagline shows up in search results.
From here you can install a theme and start building. The install itself takes two minutes; the cleanup afterwards is what keeps the site tidy six months from now.
