Membership site for a professional body

Eleven years of member records and archived material moved off a system its last maintainer had retired from.

The existing platform worked, but nobody left in the organization knew how. The risk was not features, it was that a single failure would be unrecoverable.

Approach

We mapped the data model before touching anything, migrated in stages with verification at each step, and kept the old system readable throughout.

Result

Members kept their logins and their history, and the organization now runs on something its own staff can administer.

When the real risk is knowledge, not features

A platform nobody understands is a liability even while it works. The question is not whether it does its job today, it is what happens the week something breaks and the person who built it is no longer reachable. That risk grows quietly, and it usually surfaces at the worst moment.

Migrations driven by that risk have a different shape from migrations driven by features. The goal is not new capability, it is a system the organization can actually administer. That means mapping the data before touching it, moving in verifiable stages, and keeping the old system readable until the new one has proven itself.

Member logins and history are the part that cannot be got wrong, because a member who loses eleven years of records does not care why. Continuity of that kind is why we hand over the site, the code and the design files on every project, which is set out plainly on our published rates and terms.
